This special limited (300 hand numbered copies) vinyl edition marks the first time collaboration between Banabila and Scanner. SSW approached Banabila and Scanner with the idea to do a reinterpretation of each others tracks and one track of their own. Sharing a mutual passion for vinyl a release on 10 inch seemed to be the most suitable. Both artists agreed and took the creative challenge to see what they could add to 'Ears Tell Us Where We Are In Space' (Banabila) and 'The Radiance of a Thousand Suns Burst Forth at Once' (Scanner). The first track was taken off the album 'Precious Images' (2008) and features guitarist Anton Goudsmit. The second one was the title track of the album from 2005 released the year after Scanner performed these tracks in The Netherlands.

"It was challenging to immerse yourself in one another's musical surroundings, add your own feel to it and come up with something that will hopefully appeal and surprise the original artist. I was pleased to hear Robin's remix as it is interesting to hear how someone approaches your music in a different way and takes it into a direction you could never have thought of. I love vinyl because of its size and I was charmed with the idea of the release on 10 inch in a limited edition."

"At first I had no idea of what I could add to Scanner's track that was already so subtle and original in this amazing characteristic way only Scanner can do. An experimental approach would be useless, so I ultimately chose to keep the original composition and add a loungy feel to it with the use of samples from my VoizNoiz series. The wonderful contribution of trumpet player Eric Vloeimans maintained the warmth, depth and emotion of the original track, adding a layer of melancholy that I am so happy with. The end result is more like a cover than a remix because I rerecorded most of the parts, for example the strings section."

"I felt it was a perfect opportunity to share a release with an artist I have admired for some time and to trust one another towards offering a new life in each others music. It was as if seeing through another's eyes into your very own creations. The appeal of vinyl in a special edition at a time when music is consumed in such a digital manner was also very appealing."

"I was hoping to create something that took an alternative route for Michel's music. The original piece was outstandingly beautiful so I took it apart thematically and created something that is rhythmically driven but mellow and warm. At the heart of the work is a desire to create something emotional and touching. Curiously I spent ages trying to find a comfortable direction for Michel's mix but then suddenly everything came together in just two hours and what you hear was produced in this strictly compressed time!"

In the course of years electronic music has developed into a rich multi-coloured palette of various individual mainstreams, which makes it hard to hump the different styles together. Besides, it is almost impossible to draw a clear line between the various sub-categories like space, ambient and musique concrète. Consequently, categorizing electronic music is not the aim of this compilation. It has only been our intention to make an outline of the most probing and prominent electronic compositions that have come to the fore during the past decennia. With this in our mind we have made a selection from the work of many composers who we think are of great importance to the evolution of electronic music until now. We were thrilled with the generous offer of certain artists to make exclusive tracks available for this compilation.

The music of all artists presented here can be heard every week in X-Rated on Kink FM on Sundays. In The Netherlands you can receive Kink FM on cable. This program has been the basis for the release of this album.

Bahia El Idrissi - Arhil

If anyone can be seen to be involved in 'world music', it certainly is Ali Bahia El Idrissi (Casablanca, Morocco). Idrissi is not only a talented singer, but also an accomplished percussionist, director, composer and songwriter. His musical career started in Morocco where he studied Andalucian singing. Idrissi specialised in Sufi singing, an art form made popular in the Western world by singers such as Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan from Pakistan. Idrissi hasn't only performed as Cheb Mami's and Cheb Khaled's support act, but has also made several video clips with groups such as Casa Express, who have played on the Moroccan TV many times (and in Holland on a number of migrants' TV stations). Musicians which Idrissi has worked with include Rachid & Samir Laklifi and Mohammed Benchakhchakh.

In 1998 Idrissi worked together with sound artist Michel Banabila for the first time which resulted in the track 'Idrissi'. Banabila cooperated in the past with East meets West, Yasar Saka, Erkan Ogur, and Byzantium to name a few. The cooperation between Banabila and Idrissi was a success and resulted in new tracks recorded on the promotion CD 'Kawakib Al Maghreb' produced by Banabila and published by the Zuid-Hollandse Popunie. Consequently, Idrissi and Banabila decided to really form a team for Idrissi's first solo album. Banabila initiated the project, became co-composer, made the musical arrangements and was in charge of the recording sessions, using an array of renowned guest musicians.

Idrissi's and Banabila's modern melting pot music is characterised by the use of western instruments such as samplers, complemented with traditional string and percussion instruments. This combination results in a funky mix of Sufi singing, triphop, ambient and dance beats through which one can clearly hear a hypnotic oriental groove. This type of music therefore naturally fits in with the 'Global Music' stream to which Outcaste, Yulduz Usmanova and Natacha Atlas/Transglobal Underground among others belong.

Orlando Voorn - Redeye

As one of the first Dutch musicians to establish a vital connection between Detroit and Amsterdam, Orlando Voorn has long been recognized as one of the Netherlands most original and inventive producers in the world of electronic dance music. Voorn began djing at the tender age of 12 and went on to win the DMC World Mixing Championships in 1983 with his own characteristic blend of hiphop and electro. Towards the end of the eighties he acquired his first sequencer, packed away his turntables and turned his hand to producing.

Following a series of dancefloor tracks recorded for the now defunct Lower East Side Records under the monniker of Frequency in the early nineties ('Where Is Your Evidence' and 'Kiss The Sky'), he was introduced to Juan Atkins ('Industrial Metal' and 'Game One') and went on to work with both Derrick May and Blake Baxter (as one half of the Ghetto Brothers). Voorn was also recording as Nighttripper ('Tone Exploitation'), Format ('Solid Session' - one of the most sought after classic techno records until its re-release), Basic Bastard, The Living Room, Baruka, Fix ('Flash' on Kevin Saunderson's legendary KMS label), Dope Dog, Boy ('Paco Di Bango's World') and Stalker ('The Stalker/The Riderman'). Many of these tracks can be heard on the double cd 'Best of Nightvision'.

Having made his mark producing his own vision of techno, ambient and hiphop and adamantly sidestepping genre limitations thus far, Voorn's announcement that his new album would see a foray into drum'n'bass territory aroused both anticipation and curiosity. While Voorn undoubtedly has an ear for melody, this has always been combined with an innate understanding of the importance of atmosphere and tension in music. Like Squarepusher, Amon Tobin, and Photek, he uses drum'n'bass rhythms to create something beyond pure dance music.

The eleven tracks on 'redeye' transcend the boundaries of drum'n'bass: from the funky jungle rhythms of 'Fresh Sweet Song' to the underlying ragga and techno influences. While 'Give The Drummer Some' should appeal to aficoniados of Squarepusher, 'Physically Mental' could almost be inspired by the techno-minimalism of Basic Channel.
